This 1910 edition of one of his most fundamental reference works is an essential component of Leo's Astrology for All system, guiding the armchair astrologer through the minute interpretation of a cast horoscope, including. . how rising signs and ruling planets influence each sign of the Zodiac . how the Sun and Moon preside over each sign . what the houses of the horoscope reveal about our prospects in marriage and business, friendship and health . and more. ALSO FROM COSIMO: Leo's Astrology for All, Symbolism and Astrology: An Introduction to Esoteric Astrology, Horary Astrology, and Mars: The War Lord British astrologer WILLIAM FREDERICK ALLAN (1860-1917), aka Alan Leo, published Astrologer's Magazine as well as a line of astrological materials: he founded the Astrological Lodge of the Theosophical Society in 1915.

Masterpieces of painting in the J. Paul Getty Museum

The J. Paul Getty Museum's paintings collection continues to grow in breadth and quality, and since the last edition of Masterpieces important acquisitions have been made in works ranging from the 14th to the end of the 19th century. This new edition includes many of the significant new additions to the collection, among them Gentileschi's "Lot and His Daughters": Hobbena's "Landscape": a canvas painted by both Rubens and Brueghel, "Mars and Venus": El Greco's "Christ on the Cross": Monet's "Sunrise": and Cezanne's "Italian Girl". All these masterworks are included in this volume, along with fine examples of early Renaissance paintings such as Masaccio's "Saint Andrew" and Gentile da Fabriano's richly painted "Coronation of the Virgin". Typical of the High Renaissance are Andrea Mantegna's splendid "Adoration of the Magi" and Fra Bartolommeo's "Rest on the Flight into Egypt". The art of the Netherlands in its Golden Age is represented by Jan Breughel's much-loved painting "The Entry of the Animals into Noah's Ark", while the modern age is exemplified by the "Irises" of Vincent van Gogh. Painting in France ranges from Georges de La Tour's enigmatic "Beggars' Brawl", to the Impressionism of Renoir and Monet, to Cezanne's post-Impressionist "Still Life with Apples".

Among the Himalayas

1899. An account of the author's travels in the 1890s in India and Sikkim, including sections on the Nepal and Tibet borders. As the author explains: During the past fourteen years I have traversed portions of the borderlands of Sikkim nearly every year, sketching, shooting, collecting, and especially exploring the customs of the people on the frontiers of Tibet, and of Nepal. This illustrated narrative of my journeyings I hope may reflect, in some measure, the keen enjoyment of travel in these regions, may awaken further interest in a fascinating though little known land, may assist in guiding the traveler to those features that are of greatest general interest, and bring home to the reader a whiff of the bracing breezes of the Himalayas. She Smiled on Constantinople

In 717 AD, Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium), appeared doomed. In the preceding eighty years, Muslim Arabs had captured much of North Africa and the Middle East, and were poised to take Constantinople. To save Byzantium, the senate asked a Roman General, Leo III, to become Emperor. Leo and his brilliant son Constantine V radically altered the Byzantine imperial system militarily and culturally. Leo developed a novel idea - that God was angry with the Byzantine Christians because they worshiped Christian icons, relics, and pagan idols, thus ignoring the Second Commandment. God would favor the Byzantines only if they destroyed their icons and purified Christianity. Leo's policy set in motion a century-long conflict between the iconoclast (icon breaker) emperors and the iconophiles (icon lovers). This religious struggle culminated in a final battle to define Byzantine Christianity and the control of the Empire. This novel recounts who won, why and how.

The 2007-2012 World Outlook for Fruit Drinks

This study covers the world outlook for fruit drinks across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Epigenetic Epidemiology

The exploding field of epigenetics is challenging the dogma of traditional Mendelian inheritance.  Epigenetics plays an  important role in shaping who we are and contributes to our prospects of health and disease.  While early epigenetic research focused on plant and animal models and in vitro experiments, population-based epidemiologic studies increasingly incorporate epigenetic components.  The relevance of epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation, genomic imprinting, and histone modification for disease causation has yet to be fully explored. This book covers the basic concepts of epigenetic epidemiology, discusses challenges in study design, analysis, and interpretation, epigenetic laboratory techniques, the influence of of age and environmental factors on shaping the epigenome, the role of epigenetics in the developmental origins hypothesis, and provides the state of the art on the epigenetic epidemiology of various health conditions including childhood syndromes, cancer, infectious diseases, inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, psychiatric disorders, diabetes, obesity and metabolic disorders, and atherosclerosis. With contributions from: Peter Jones, Jean-Pierre Issa, Gavin Kelsey, Robert Waterland, and many other experts in epigenetics!

Atmospheric Pollution: A Global Problem

In this thoroughly revised, updated and expanded edition of his classic textbook Atmospheric Pollution (1987), Derek Elsom provides the clearest introduction available to the atmospheric pollution problem, its causes and effects, and approaches to its control. Atmospheric Pollution - A Global Problem retains the clear structure of the widely-praised earlier edition, but includes new sections covering urban smog alert systems, the US Clean Air Act, the rising pollution in the UK and Europe, the pollution problems of Eastern Europe, and other topics of current concern. The discussions of acid rain, the Antartic ozone hole and global warming have been greatly expanded, and new appendices include a glossary of key terms and a list of contact addresses. The text is now comprehensively illustrated with 39 photographs, 110 diagrams and 47 tables. Atmospheric Pollution - A Global Problem will be welcomed by students and specialists alike in geography and related environmental science fields, as well as by anyone with an interest in human-environment issues.

Women and New Reproductive Technologies: Medical, Psychosocial, Legal, and Ethical Dilemmas

Although major breakthroughs in reproductive technology have created dramatic opportunities for many people, they are not without problems. More significant than the question of whether the technologies are "good" or "bad," however, is for whom they are good, in what instances, and to whom they should be made accessible. These issues can be debated at multiple levels: from the ethical implications, to the social and psychological consequences for society and for the individual, to the legal and medical outcomes. Each chapter highlights a different array of problems and benefits, while emphasizing four major themes: the impact of technology on women's lives: the role of women: the individual versus society: and the fetus as patient.

New Motherhood: Cultural and Personal Transitions in the 1980s

This Australian study of pregnancy, birth and early motherhood in the 1980s explores women's perceptions of childbearing in the context of an examination of social changes and ideological shifts over the last few decades. Drawing on an eclectic selection of sources from sociology, anthropology, psychology, medicine and popular literature, the authors provide fresh insights into the symbolic significance of social practices and imagery of reproduction and, in particular, the contemporary experience of labour in its cultural setting. Economically written and elegantly argued, the book addresses a wide range of issues in its treatment of birth and maternity as both substantive and theoretical concerns which extend the limits of current feminist prespectives on these matters. Women's and men's attitudes to childbearing, enmeshed in a web of social and political relationships, are shown to be seduced, as well as coerced, by pressures and influences from many conflicting sources. The authors consider thes

The 2006 Slovenia Economic and Product Market Databook

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Slovenia. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within Slovenia and the extent to which Slovenia might be used as a point of distribution within Europe. From an economic perspective, however, Slovenia does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Slovenia over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Slovenia when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Slovenia used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Slovenia. Without Slovenia, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Slovenia, Europe, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Europe and Slovenia. The data presented are the result of various spatial econometric and time-series forecasting models which, for each category presented, are applied to forecast and allocate latent demand across all countries of the world and major distribution centers or centers of dominant influence within each country. This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one country to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Slovenia as an area of dominant influence in Europe and, potentially, the world.

Sara Paretsky CD Collection: Total Recall, Blacklist, Fire Sale (V. I. Warshawski)

Total Recall: In Total Recall, Sara Paretsky brings together several disparate plots in one gripping story. This powerfully suspenseful novel confronts the machinations of a vast and corrupt industry that trades on the victims of Nazi terrorism: the strange and dubious phenomenon of "recovered memory": and a personal story that brings V. I. Warshawski into the long-buried past of her dearest friend and mentor, Dr. Lotty Herschel. Blacklist: Eager for something physical to do in the spirit-exhausting wake of 9/11, V. I. accepts a request from an old client to check up on an empty family mansion: subsequently surprises an intruder in the dark: and, giving chase, topples into a pond. Grasping for something to hold on to, her fingers close around a lifeless human hand. It is the body of a reporter who had been investigating events of forty-five years earlier, and V. I.?s discovery quickly sucks her into the history of two great Chicago families. Fire Sale: V. I. Warshawski may have left her old South Chicago neighborhood, but she learns that she cannot escape it. When V. I. takes over coaching duties of the girls? basketball team at her former high school, she faces an ill-equipped, ragtag group of gangbangers, fundamentalists, and teenage moms, who inevitably draw the detective into their family woes. As she tries to find a pair of errant teenagers, and to track down a particularly cruel murderer, her own life is almost forfeit in the swamps that lie under the city of Chicago.

Religion and business

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER IV RELIGION AND THE EMPLOYER We all remember how when boys we hated to carry water for mother, but stood in line for a chance to carry it for the elephants when the circus came to town. We know how to-day our children hate to help about housework at home and yet are crazy to go to camp and work very much harder building fires, cooking, and keeping the camp clean. We see men who are languid and indifferent about their work in the factory, go out into the hot sun at noontime, pitch ball, and run the bases with life and vigor. All of these things show that it is not work, as such, that men and women want to avoid. People love to work when they are interested in the work. The trouble is that the masses are not interested in their work. Not being1 able to see the results of their labors, they are1 not stimulated by appreciation. They lack the desire to do things. The great need to-day is to revive in labor an interest in the work. When this is accomplished, labor problems will fade away, production will greatly increase, the cost of living will decline, and every one will be healthier, happier, and more prosperous. The factory system and the "master and servant" idea is resulting in castrating labor economically. Labor is becoming an economic eunuch. By nature man likes to produce. He starts in by making mud pies, then he builds a hut, and then he makes other things. The boy by nature turns to his jacknife, and the girl by nature turns to her dolls. After, however, a man has been in a mill or factory a certain length of time that natural desire to produce leaves him. The labor problem will never be / solved until the desire to produce is revived. For this / revival we must depend upon religion. It will take more than higher wages or shorter hours to recreate i...

My silent war

In the annals of espionage, one name towers above all others: that of H.A.R. 'Kim' Philby, the ringleader of the legendary Cambridge spies. A member of the British establishment, Philby joined the Secret Intelligence Service in 1940, rose to the head of Soviet counterintelligence, and, as M16's liaison with the CIA and the FBI, betrayed every secret of Allied operations to the Russians, fatally compromising covert actions to roll back the Iron Curtain in the early years of the Cold War. Written from Moscow in 1967, "My Silent War" shook the world and introduced a new archetype in fiction: the unrepentant spy. It inspired John Le Carre's Smiley novels and the later espionage novels of Graham Greene. Kim Philby was history's most successful spy. He was also an exceptional writer who gave us the great iconic story of the Cold War and revolutionized, in the process, the art of espionage writing.

GLIAL CELL DEVELOPMENT (Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology Series)

Glial cell function and development has become a major focus of research in the neurosciences. Distinct glial progenitors have been identified, key glial genes have been cloned, and the growth factor regulation of glial survival, proliferation, and function are being unraveled. As a result, it will soon be possible to understand at the molecular level some vital functions, such as myelination and regulation of axon growth and repair. In this book, leading researchers review the current state of knowledge of all classes of glia and describe how this knowledge is being applied to the treatment of human disease. It is a valuable reference book for all researchers in developmental biology and neuroscience.

Child Abuse : New Directions in Prevention and Treatment across the Lifespan (Banff Conference on Behavioral Science Series)

Child Abuse brings together experts in both physical abuse and sexual abuse to create one of the few volumes that has addressed innovative approaches to treatment and prevention in these two areas. The resulting compendium of information provides insights into the current psychological perspectives on the causes and treatment of different forms of child maltreatment as well as the delivery of early intervention and prevention services. The book begins in the first part with a conceptual overview of the effect of physical abuse on the life course of children and adults. Chapters on physical abuse also examine recent findings related to child abuse offenders, children who witness domestic violence, treatment of abusive adults, and prevention programs aimed at dating adolescents and pregnant women. Contributors focusing on child sexual abuse note new approaches to the delivery of treatment services for these children as well as current developments in the interface between abuse victims and the court system. Considering the needs of both adult survivors and children, Child Abuse also discusses how child maltreatment interventions can be integrated into broader intervention services. An ideal book for use in professional training and development, Child Abuse will also guide policymakers at state and national levels to emerging new models and programs. This volume is likewise a useful resource for researchers and practitioners in social work, clinical/counseling psychology, mental health, and public health.

According to renowned neuropsychiatrist Daniel Siegel, however, if parents and teens can work together to form a deeper understanding of the brain science behind all the tumult, they will be able to turn conflict into connection and form a deeper understanding of one another. In Brainstorm, Siegel illuminates how brain development impacts teenagers? behavior and relationships. Drawing on important new research in the field of interpersonal neurobiology, he explores exciting ways in which understanding how the teenage brain functions can help parents make what is in fact an incredibly positive period of growth, change, and experimentation in their children?s lives less lonely and distressing on both sides of the generational divide.

Critical Essays of the Seventeenth Century ... (v. 2)

Excerpt from book: ABRAHAM COWLEY PREFACE TO POEMS A T my return lately into England, I met by great accident -(for such I account it to be, that any Copy of it should be extant any where so long, unless at his house who printed it) a Book entituled, The Iron Age, and published $ under my name during the time of my absence. I wondred very much how one who could be so foolish to write so ill Verses, should yet be so Wise to set them forth as another Mans rather than his own : though perhaps he might have made a better choice, and not fathered the Bastard upon 10 such a person, whose stock of Reputation is, I fear, little enough'for maintenance of his own numerous Legitimate Off-spring of that kinde. It would have been much less injurious, if it had pleased the Author to put forth some of my Writings under his own name, rather then his own 15 under mine. He had been in that a more pardonable Plagiary, and had done less wrong by Robbery then he does by such a Bounty: for no body can be justified by the Imputation even of anothers Merit, and our own course Cloathes are like to become us better then those of another 20 mans, though never so rich: but these, to say the truth, were so beggarly, that I my self was ashamed to wear them. It was in vain for me that I avoided censure by the concealment of my own writings, if my reputation could be thus Executed in Effigie: and impossible it is for any good 25 Name to be in safety, if the malice of Witches have the power to consume and destroy it in an Image of their own making. The 2007-2012 Outlook for Pears in Japan

This study covers the latent demand outlook for pears across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it?s prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for pears. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. Shefzilla: Conquering Haute Cuisine at Home

On a brisk February morning, Stewart Woodman learned he’d been named a semifinalist for Best Chef: Midwest by the prestigious James Beard Foundation. That afternoon, a fire gutted his restaurant, Heidi’s, a southwest Minneapolis bistro whose inspired meals had garnered a passionate following among neighbors and travelers alike. Undaunted, Woodman turned his time and energy to cooking on a smaller scale?at home, for family and friends. He learned to adjust his tools and ingredients but not his style, and the result is chef-quality fare suitable for the home kitchen. Known to local food enthusiasts as “Shefzilla” for his blog of the same name, Woodman offers his “ingredients-forward” philosophy in 150 recipes that will allow home cooks to create fabulous yet unpretentious dishes like Roasted Beet Salad with Soy “Sauce” and Napa Cabbage, Wild Rice and Cremini Mushroom Hot Dish, and Pink Peppercorn Ice Cream. Woodman’s food and life lessons came under the tutelage of Alain Ducasse, Jean- Georges Vongerichten, Eric Ripert, Gray Kunz, and Michael Romano and in restaurant kitchens in Montreal, Vancouver, New York City, and Minneapolis. In Shefzilla, he presents decades of cooking knowledge in meal-sized bites that will inspire home cooks to expand their repertoire. Through tips and stories and carefully developed recipes accompanied by lush full-color photos, Shefzilla entertains and educates as he helps you conquer haute cuisine at home. Stewart Woodman trained under some of the world’s most celebrated chefs before striking out on his own in Minneapolis. In 2006, Food Wine named him one of America’s “Best New Chefs,” cheering his “flawless modern-American food.”

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

This econometric study covers the world outlook for light emitting diodes (LEDs) across more than 200 countries. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for light emitting diodes (LEDs). It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

The 2007-2012 Outlook for 1.6 G.p.f. Water Closet Bowls Close Coupled for Use with Flush Tank with 17 Inches from Floor to Rim of Bowl Excluding Flush Tank Unless Integral in Greater China

This study covers the latent demand outlook for 1.6 g.p.f. water closet bowls close coupled for use with flush tank with 17 inches from floor to rim of bowl excluding flush tank unless integral across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as ?regions?). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of ?economic population?, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits: this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this ?economic? definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city?s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for 1.6 g.p.f. water closet bowls close coupled for use with flush tank with 17 inches from floor to rim of bowl excluding flush tank unless integral. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

These poems are based on one woman's journey through love, the evocative beginning where everything is wonderful and it feels like when a flower is opening it's petals for the first time, until the bittersweet death of that love when we need to get over the pain. Interior Decoration

Excerpt from book: PART I CHAPTER II THE PRINCIPLES OF FORM AND THEIR RELATION TO THE DECORATIVE IDEA THE term "design" has generally meant the choice and arrangement of certain shapes or forms to produce a decorative effect. It should include not only form but colour, or rather colour and form, for without colour there is no form. If all objects were exactly the same colour tone it would be impossible to see where one object left off and the other began. In fact, there would be no shapes or forms to discuss. The greater the colour contrast in hue, value, or intensity, or any two or three of these qualities, the more clearly defined is the form arrangement which these objects produce. The real recognition of form is a mental process, and it is sufficient to remark here that this is a comparison of previously acquired ideas. Form is not quickly perceived through the sense of sight like colour. This makes the study of form more involved and perhaps, in many cases, less easily understood at first. Design or composition includes, then, the choice and arrangement of colours, forms and lines with a unit as the desired result. This unit may be the exterior of a huge cathedral, the interior of any room, the individual unit used in any one of these, or whatever in itself expresses the unit idea. As has already been noted, the structure is the fundamental reason for all decorated things. The build or structure determines the form. The form, then, conversely, is the result of structural lines of certain kinds used in certain combinations to represent individual ideas. When we realize that everything depends upon the structural idea it is much easier to see relationships between shapes or forms in furnishing construction and the room in which they are to be used, than if we see parts of furnis...

A Child Sees God: Children Talk About Bible Stories

'Unless you become like a child, you cannot enter the Kingdom of heaven'. Throughout the years, many people have attempted to understand exactly what Jesus meant when he said these words. In "A Child Sees God", Howard Worsley explores how we can all learn from a child's perspective of the world and how the child's eye view of the Bible presents a new way of understanding this ancient scripture.Looking at a variety of bible stories read to many different children at different stages of development, the book offers not only fresh insights into the meaning and significance of these stories but also reflections on how adults can use the Biblical text in the company of children. Exploring ways of encouraging children's discussion of the stories and recording their comments, Worsley acknowledges and celebrates the originality of a child's vision and the huge implications of this vision for parents, teachers and ministers. The themes of the Bible are universal and the stories explored in the book are divided into seven sections, classified by their basic plot as texts of wonder, adventure and leadership, terror, justice and judgement, comfort and hope, comedy, or mercy and forgiveness. This innovative study of a child's perceptions of Bible stories provides a new and illuminating perspective of the text and will be a fascinating read for parents, teachers and ministers, and anyone with an interest in childhood spirituality.

Breakouts And Babies: 7 Natural Ways To Get Rid Of Acne During Pregnancy

I can still remember with great fondness and humour when I was sitting in my doctors office, 22 years old, shocked in disbelief that I might be pregnant. ?What more proof do you want', my doctor said, 'You have a positive pregnancy test, you have acne on your chin?? at that point I stopped freaking out for a minute and became really self concious? I replied, ?Oh its just a bit of eczema, I have sensitive skin.? He laughed at me, said it really was a bit of acne. Then it hit me and I realised that this was it. Yes, I was pregnant. And, thanks to that, I had a case of acne, which was just as much of a shock to someone who rarely gets a pimple, let alone acne ? and it was clearly obvious to everyone else around me! So here?s some information I wish I had when I was a young 22 years old!

Sexually Transmissible Infections in Clinical Practice: A problem-based approach

Undergraduate medical education has moved away from the former didactic style of teaching to one of problem-based learning. The specialty of Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) that includes sexually transmissible infections (STIs) lends itself to the latter: self-directed learning. This is particularly important as time allocated to the specialty in most medical curricula is short, and the student cannot possibly cover all the topics with which he/she is expected to be familiar. Several excellent textbooks on GUM exist, but they mostly follow the traditional format, with emphasis on individual diseases rather than case-scenarios. The books that follow a more syndromic approach do not pose questions to help the student understand how the material presented can be translated into clinical practice. As specialist clinics become more hard-pressed, family medicine practitioners are thus becoming increasingly involved in the management of STIs and there is without doubt now a need for a book specifically designed for problem solving in STI management.

The Road To America's Economic Meltdown

This is a story about one of our own, a US Army Sergeant who returns home after serving many years overseas. He had been to two different wars and, after 14 years overseas, this was to be his first duty assignment inside the United States. He encountered great difficulty from his home state when he tried to obtain his local driver's license, and only with the aid of a state senator, was he able to obtain his license. Then, when he went to register his car, in the new state where he was assigned, he noticed that he was being required to pay for unusual things before he was allowed to register his car. After going through all the local government's money making schemes, he, along with his wife and children, bought a house, using a mortgage, not far from where they were renting. They did so just in time to get caught up in the developing housing crisis that may affect his family's ability to hold on to their beautiful home. The sergeant had to do some quick thinking and find out everything he could about what was really going on: was there a conspiracy for the rich to get richer-at the expense of everyone else-was he the subject of predatory lending, and would his family suffer through the embarrassment of the foreclosure process? The sergeant began researching the history of land development, mortgaging, foreclosure, the economic crisis, and the government's involvement in all of this-and this is what he learned.

Breaking

Keeping secrets is easy. Until love tempts him to break his cover. Fall or Break, Book 2 Archer Hart, former SIS assassin, has just completed a freelance hit job when he finds himself in a sniper's scope. The bullet whizzing past his ear is a clear message: someone wants him dead. Retirement will have to wait, as his only choice is to assume a new identity-and keep running. Conrad Black is a broken man. The injured barrister has come to the beach to recover from a hit-and-run "accident", with plenty of time to wonder who might be wishing he'd been left dead instead of partially paralyzed. When he spots a surfer in trouble, he throws his crutches aside to pull the man to safety. One glance at Archer takes Conrad's breath away. And Archer finds himself envying the hands Conrad is using to pet his dog. But as the net tightens, both men can feel the targets on their backs heating up. The only thing that will save them is the truth...before death snatches away their one chance at love. Warning: Contains a mercenary who's broken the law beyond all recognition, and a stodgy barrister who is the law. Also: a whole lot of crossing lines drawn in the sand, and even more tussling to determine who gets on top.

John McCain : An American Odyssey

From the Naval Academy to the POW camps of Vietnam to Capitol Hill and possibly to the White House -- one of America's most remarkable men In 1998, at the dedication of the National Prisoner of War Museum in Andersonville, Georgia, former Attorney General Griffin Bell, a Democrat, introduced Senator John McCain, the featured speaker and a Republican, with these words: "We often hear people now say, where are our heroes, where have all our heroes gone? Well, Senator McCain is an authentic, living American hero." So begins Robert Timberg's gripping and penetrating biography of Senator John McCain, the man who may someday be President of the United States. In John McCain: An American Odyssey, Timberg provides a riveting account of McCain's remarkable life -- from his rambunctious childhood and his madcap escapades as a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman to his grim experiences as a combat pilot and POW in Vietnam, where he was held prisoner by the North Vietnamese for five and a half years. Most importantly, the author illuminates Senator McCain's postwar evolution into one of our country's most distinguished political leaders and a formidable presidential candidate. Inspired by the success of The Nightingale's Song (selected by The New York Times as a "Notable Book of the Year" in 1995 and by Time as one of that year's five best nonfiction books), John McCain: An American Odyssey probes more deeply into the life of this hugely colorful, straight-talking American original. It is a rich and captivating portrait of one of America's most fascinating and provocative public figures -- a man who has captured the imagination of millions of Americans and who will continue to be a most prominent figure on the American political landscape.

This volume outlines the general aims and history of the project and covers the period of work on three areas of Catalhoyuk from 1995-99. In addition, interpretive discussion is incorporated, bringing in animal bone, lithic, ceramic, micromorphology data analyses in order to make sense of the buildings, features and units. Taking on the Dead: The Famished Trilogy Book One (Volume 1)

Life for Kansas was perfect until the day the world changed. She has been hiding out for four years in solitude. It's the only way to survive. The only way not to draw the living dead. Helping a small group of people, she learns the new world might not be what she assumes. Venturing out of her refuge and comfort zone, she meets Rudy, who helps her find a greater purpose. She realizes that the world has moved on without her. Only it's not what she expects. Her knowledge of the living dead grows and only makes her more curious as humanity continues to hang on by a thread. While on her search for answers she finds comfort in new friendships and love, but her past seems as if it will haunt her forever. Kansas takes it upon herself to help other survivors, which would be easy if the famished were the only obstacles. In a trilogy plot thick with twists and turns, it is emotional as much as it is horrifyingly gripping.

Works of Michael de Montaigne (1887)

Excerpt from book: THE AUTHOR TO THE READER. THIS, reader, is a book without guile. It tells thee, at the very outset, that I had no other end in putting it together but what was domeftic and private. I had no regard therein either to thy service or my glory : my powers are equal to no such defign. It was intended for the particular use of my relations and friends, in order that, when they have loft me, which they muft soon do, they may here find some traces of my quality and humour, and may thereby nourifh a more entire and lively recollection of me. Had I proposed to court the favour of the world, I had set myself out in borrowed beauties : but 'twas my wifli to be seen in my fimple, natural, and ordinary garb, without ftudy or artifice, for 'twas myself I had to paint. My defedls will appear to the life, in all their native form, as far as confifts with respect to the public. Had I been born among those nations who, 'tis said, ftill live in the pleasant liberty of the law of nature, I allure thee I mould readily have depicted myself at full length and quite naked. Thus, reader, thou perceiveft I am myself the subject of my book: 'ris not worth thy while to take up thy time longer with such a frivolous matter : so fare thee well. The Fool Errant

I never credited her with more than charity towards myself: and if I gloried in the fact that I was privileged to love so wondrous a being, the thought humiliated me at the same time. I was conscious of my nothingness before her worthiness, and desperate to fit myself for her high society. A noble rage for excellence possessed me: like any champion or knight of old I strove to approve my manhood, only that I might lay the spoils of it at her sacred feet.

Lou-Lan and Other Stories (Japan's Modern Writers)

From Japan's master of historical fiction, winner of its highest cultural award, six stories in quest of the hidden treasures of Asia's past. The six stories, translated by two outstanding translators from the Japanese, exemplify Inoue's skill at both evoking an historical atmosphere and telling a gripping tale, and they will convey to a Western reader exactly why Inoue was one of the most popular writers in Japan today. The majority of the stories may be generally classified as "historical fiction," but, more precisely, they are extremely well-researched forays into remote geographical areas and little-known periods of history. The title story, "Lou-lan," recounts the turbulent history and final disappearance of an ancient city in Central Asia. "The Sage" and "Princess Yung-t'ai's Necklace" also recreate the tempestuous past of continental Asia. The remaining three stories--"The Opaline Cup," "Passage to Fudaraku," and "The Rhododendrons"--are set in Japan. The first of these is about a pair of cups that were treasured by an ancient king and are brought together after being separated for over a thousand years. The second is a narrative centering around a custom that arose in a remote Buddhist temple, whereby the abbot was cast adrift in a boat to die at sea. And the third is a masterly characterization of an old scholar reminiscing about his life.

Discrimination in the Teamsters

When Maria Felinska left her native Poland to escape the perils of communist oppression, she came to America convinced it would be a land of safety and opportunity. This vision was reinforced when she was able to use her skills as a bookkeeper to land a good job with the Teamsters. Full of hope for her new life, she never imagined the abuse, harassment, discrimination, and deceit which awaited her. Felinska worked for the New England Teamsters and Trucking Industry Pension Fund for twenty-six years and four months, working for the Teamsters during the reign of Jimmy Hoffa, Frank Fitzsimmons, Roy Williams, Jackie Presser, and William McCarthy. She worked hard, quickly receiving recognition for her competency, and was shortly promoted to full-charge bookkeeper. In the beginning, she was highly respected and enjoyed her assignments. But as the years went by, this changed. A new manager meant changes in the office and Maria was singled out for bad treatment. A new, inexperienced and much younger bookkeeper was hired to slowly push her out of her job. She was ridiculed, manipulated, and purposely kept from learning the computer skills which would soon be essential to her in order to perform her duties and responsibilities as a full-charge bookkeeper. In the meantime, she was noticing some strange and questionable practices by the accountants of the Pension Fund, which were intentionally being concealed from her. At this time, it became apparent that they wanted to get rid of her, being fearful that she might get to know too much. Still, Maria wanted to keep her job and worked harder than ever. But things escalated and she soon learned that even people she thought were friends were involved in the conspiracy to force her out of the Teamsters. Finally, when she was forced to resign and ''retire'' against her will, that was only the start of a new set of battles. In the process of forcing her out of the Teamsters, not only was she constantly being humiliated and discriminated against, she was also illegally cheated out of her rightful pension. Felinska took the case to several government agencies, but no one would touch her case against the all-powerful Teamsters. Finally, she hired her own lawyers, but that would not be enough to combat the mighty Teamsters. This book shares one woman's courageous fight to expose the discrimination and abuse of a powerful force in America.

Josef Holbrooke and his work

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER II THE CRITIC AND HIS WORK Most of Holbrooke's work in musical criticism has been done in "The Saturday Review," the " New Age," and the " English Review," though he has occasionally contributed to other journals. He has written much under his own name, but he has also used various noms-de-plume—such as " Phoenix," "Saint Joseph," " The Raven," and " Ixion "—in other cases. His criticisms scarcely touch upon the music of the older masters at all, but his pen has been almost exclusively dedicated to advancing the cause of modern music, and of the English composers in particular, and to showing up the abuses and absurdities that deface our musical life. These matters are of far more vital importance to him than the claims of ancient art. His style of writing is singularly galvanic and impulsive. When he wishes to score a point he often does so in language as forcible as the blow of a hammer. Generally, though, he expresseshis opinions in a confidential chatty sort of manner, which, in spite of occasional outbursts of vehemence, are never delivered in the ex cathedra fashion so much favoured by more dogmatic critics. The personal note is nearly always sounded in his writings. He pens these critical articles not only on behalf of English music generally, but also with the attempted object of removing the hindrances that bar the progress of his own art work. But however much he may feel the neglect that good native art suffers in this country, he is never bitter. He has the saving quality of humour that enables him to take a broad outlook on men and things in general. He is cynical at times and severe at times, but his ready wit redeems his assertions from all trace of vindictiveness. And he has no aversion to turning his wit against himself either. As to his ...

AL-GHAZALI ON CONDUCT IN TRAVEL: Book XVII of the Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ghazali Series)

Al-Ghazali on Conduct in Travel is a translation of the seventeenth book of the Revival of the Religious Sciences. In it Ghazali explains the different outer and inner reasons for travel. Outer reasons include the pilgrimage, the search for knowledge, and the flight from danger: while inner reasons include the acquisition of virtue and the disciplining of the soul. Ghazali divides travel into four classes and portrays the right inward and outward conduct for each. He then follows this with a practical chapter on the use of religious concessions while travelling and concludes with a final chapter on how the traveller is to establish the proper direction and times for prayer.

Birdy: The Story of a Tiny Cockatiel Who Survived 6 Weeks in the Wild

The day had started out just fine. Nothing hinted of the drama that was about to unfold that afternoon. Two occupants of a coastal home in sunny Queensland, Australia, busied themselves with a range of activities, while sneaking in some snuggling time with Birdy, their lutino cockatiel. The tiny family shared a casual breakfast on the warm veranda (Birdy included). Afterwards, they spent some time playing with Birdy, and giving her the tender scratches on her head that she loved so much. Casual observers would call it ?a day like hundreds of others.? But then, the unspeakable happened.
